Aligning eLearn to Common Core Standards

eLearn NewsQwests are specifically created to incorporate the Common Core Standards, including:

• Career Readiness Anchor Standards for

    – Reading for grades 6-12

    – Writing for grades 6-12

• Content Specific Learning Standards

    – Social Sciences

    – Science

    – Technology

In adhering to the Common Core Standards, NewsQwests are:

• Aligned with college and work expectations

• Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills

• Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards

• Informed by top-performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our
global economy and society

• Evidence and/or research-based

NewsQwests are identified by grade level (6-8, 9-10, 11-12) and all consistently help students understand, demonstrate, and build upon their knowledge and skills in the

• Through Applications of Learning, students demonstrate and deepen their understanding
of basic knowledge and skills

• These applied learning skills cross academic disciplines and reinforce the important
learning of the disciplines

Solving Problems

• Recognize and investigate problems

• Formulate and propose solutions supported by reason and evidence


• Express and interpret information and ideas

• Gather a range of opinions and determine the best course of action

• Study and draw conclusions about issues

• Read and interpret textual and visual information

• Listen carefully to others and be able to organize and explain own ideas

Using Technology

• Use appropriate instruments, electronic equipment, computers and networks to access information, process ideas and communicate results

• Technology provides a channel through which students can gather knowledge of the past,
search information about today and make hypotheses regarding the future

• This technology includes databases, computer programs, and on-line services that allow students to gather and process data from a variety of sources from around the world

• Students can share ideas and information not only with their classmates, but with a "virtual classroom" of students from across the world

Working on Teams

• While NewsQwests are designed for students to work independently at their own pace, the suggested discussion topics provide a good basis for students to work in groups as well

• Learn and contribute productively as individuals and as members of groups

• Encourage students to listen carefully to the views of all members of a group and to represent their own points of view appropriately and effectively

• The group benefits from the individual knowledge and skills of its members

• Each individual holds an important relationship to the whole

Making Connections

• Recognize and apply connections of important information and ideas within and
among learning areas

• Understand and grasp connections of core disciplines and their relations to other
academic areas
